Market Concentration
Our proprietary database has identified 171 brands of hemp beverages in the US market today. As is common with early-stage markets, many players are still fighting for market share. The top 10 brands only account for about 41% of the market.
The market leader is likely below 10% of the total market currently. This is certain to change in the near future as brands gain recognition and distribution and grow market share significantly. This data is very subjective. Financials for private companies are hard to come by. Please do not take this at face value.

Brand Locations
While hemp beverages are sold widely throughout the US, several states have become hubs as brand headquarters. Companies based in California, Minnesota and New York make up almost exactly half of the brands in the marketplace.
Brand Geographic Presence
While larger companies will eventually crowd out some of the smaller players, there are still many single-state operators as indicated in the following chart
The data below is intended to showcase the breadth of hemp beverages in America through sales and consumption. Due to state and federal laws not every state allows for these beverages as well as can limit the milligrams that are allowed to be distributed throughout these products. Thus some areas of the United States are more concentrated than others when it comes to hemp beverages. It should be noted that only about 25% of brands report the states where they sell products.

Geograpic Performance
Across the 15 BDSA-tracked markets, all but two markets saw either an increase or stability in beverage sales over the past year. The two notable exceptions were Colorado and Massachusetts.
- Missouri: launched adult-use sales in early 2023, grew its beverage sales the most last year, totaling $15.3 million in 2023, up from $7 million in 2022.
- Michigan: increased sales significantly from 2022 to 2023. In 2023, a 32% increase in the cannabis beverage sales occurred from the previous year in the mature adult-use markets.
- California: developed it’s brand landscape by acquiring 47 active brands throughout the state in Q2 2024. California beverages sales totaled $19.5 million in Q2 2024. This provided a six percent increase from the previous year.
- Massachusetts: emerged into the market with its beverage brand landscape creating 34 activ brands throughout the state last quarter. However, unlike California who increased sales, Massachusetts acquired a decrease of -3.7% between Q2 2023 and Q2 2024. Sale revenue reported at $5.7 million in Q2 2024.
Reviews
Customer reviews are essential for building trust and credibility in today’s marketplace. They provide social proof, helping potential buyers make confident decisions based on real experiences. For brands, reviews offer valuable feedback, drive engagement, and can significantly influence search rankings and sales. Simply put, authentic reviews turn satisfied customers into your most powerful marketing tool.
COA's
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is very important in selling cannabis products. It is a document that verifies the product’s cannabinoid content, presence of contaminants (like heavy metals or pesticides), and other important aspects like THC levels. COAs are crucial for ensuring product safety, quality, and compliance with regulations. While the majority of products found in the market include their COAs on their websites, there is still room for improvement.
Product Count
The typical brand in the hemp beverage space carries about six products. The following chart lists the companies with the highest product count.
Delta 9 THC Concentration
The Delta-9 THC concentration in hemp drinks is crucial because it determines both the legal compliance and the psychoactive effects of the beverage. Under federal law, hemp-derived products must contain no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight, making precise formulation essential. For consumers, the amount of Delta-9 directly influences the intensity and duration of the experience, so transparency in labeling and dosing is key to safety, enjoyment, and trust in the brand.

CBD Concentration
The concentration of CBD in hemp beverages is crucial because it directly influences the drink’s effectiveness and the experience it delivers. Whether consumers seek relaxation, stress relief, or potential wellness benefits like reduced inflammation or improved sleep, the amount of CBD determines how noticeable and consistent those effects will be. Too little CBD may not produce any noticeable benefit, while too much can lead to unwanted drowsiness or interact with medications. That’s why knowing the precise CBD concentration helps consumers make informed choices tailored to their needs and tolerance levels, ensuring both safety and satisfaction.

Store Locator
Store locators are important for brands and consumers so they can find the product in their local market. Most use 3rd party software that is designed for this purpose. They will usually integrate with mapping tools so you can easily go to your state and see the various locations where the product exists. A few challenges. Brands have to have commitment to this process. Like most systems junk in, junk out. Brands not only need to add new retailers but also take down those that do not carry products anylong. This makes for a not perfect offering but still important. Brands that do not have locators are likely new and/or not big enough to engage.
Shops
Most brands have the ability to sell both retail and online to consumers, if they wish. When selling online, brands have the ability to research consumers outside of their storefront. Consumers, who shop online, have the ability to seek out more information about the brand as well as product through exploring the website. Also, consumers, who purchase online, have the ability to read a brand’s certificates of authenticity (COA) if acceptable.
Social Networking
